Welcome to Spectrum Health and The Network's LGBTQ+ Career Development Program. Over the course of the workshop you will develop your job hunting strategies, network with fellow job-seekers and meet with career advisers and mentors.

The workshop is completely free. Each session will last approximately two hours.  Space is limited and PRE-REGISTRATION is required for this 3 month program.  Once your registration has been confirmed, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for the program. 

FEBRUARY 15TH, 2016
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
CAREER EXPLORATION: 
 

  • What are you most suited to do for a living? What barriers exist in finding a career? This workshop helps you identify a cluster of job titles that reflect your personal preferences, talents and work styles.
    • Outcomes:  Participants will complete the O*Net online assessment:mynextmove.org/explore/ip and draft a personal career plan that includes career goals.

FEBRUARY 29TH, 2016
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
RESUME AND COVER LETTER:
 

  • This workshop will teach you to write a resume to sharpen your edge in a competitive job market. Topics covered include how resumes are organized, format choices, resume dos and don'ts, electronic mailing tips, importance of cover letters, and sample resumes and cover letters.
    • Outcomes:  Participants will have a resume and cover letter that showcases their talents.

MARCH 14TH, 2016
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
ONLINE JOB SEARCH:  

  • Overview of the entire job search campaign: effective job search strategies, choosing an occupation, marketing yourself, using social networking sites in your job search, making a good impression, and the importance of follow-up.
    • Outcomes:  Participants will identify 10 positions to apply for and successfully apply to one position.

MARCH 28TH, 2016
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
INTERVIEW WITH CONFIDENCE:

  • In this workshop you'll learn why companies use phone screen interviews, the key elements of phone communication, what the interviewer wants to hear you say, and how to answer the interviewer's questions more effectively.  We will also focus on presenting yourself with confidence for the in-person interview and how to succeed in the behavioral interview (when an interviewer seeks your responses to various work situations).  Participants will have the opportunity to have a mock interview with a career advisor.
    • Outcomes:  Participants will participate in a mock interview.

APRIL 11TH , 2016
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING:  

  • Networking is essential to your job hunt. Learn how to network effectively in your job search campaign. Topics include building your network, your 30-second infomercial, informational interviews, and dos and don’ts of networking. 
    • Outcomes:  Participants will draft their elevator speech and identify their personal board of directors.

OPEN HOUSE AND CELEBRATION

  • It's time to celebrate success, evaluate your career goals, examine personal challenges and explore strategies to move you career forward.
    • Outcomes: Participants will "graduate" from the program and have a plan to move forward
