“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re excited the day has arrived. Simply put, love is love, and we’re thankful the Supreme Court recognized that today. Everyone deserves a chance at a happy marriage regardless of what gender they love. I have two sons, with my husband Jacob, and they will be thrilled when I tell them that their family is now recognized in Michigan and across the nation.”
— Mike Hemmingsen ~ Grand Rapids Pride Center Board President
It started as a simple idea from our Proud Community Partners at Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. light the Blue Bridge in rainbow colors to celebrate SCOTUS ruling in favor of equal marriage for all on 6.26.15 (Check Out Our "Selfies of LOVE" Gallery) With the idea to celebrate and honor "All the good ongoing work in Grand Rapids to build an equitable and inclusive city for all."
Soon several organizations from Experience GR to Rapid Growth Media to Grand Rapids Pride Center with Mayor George Heartwell and his team joining in to make it a reality on July 2nd, 2015. Hundreds of proud LGBTQ and allies turned out nightly to take pictures and celebrate their love publicly.
Leave it to Tommy Allen to really bring the community together with his Facebook page Love Wins At The Rainbow Bridge and corresponding hashtags. Never one to settle, with typical Tommy Flare, he then TurntUp the closing night, July 10th, into THE EVENT of the season!
